‘Gothic’
“City Methodist Church was the vision of Rev. William Grant Seaman. Constructed of Bedford limestone, the church and adjoining community / commercial space was built at a cost topping $1 million. ($385 thousand was donated by United States Steel Corporation) Membership peaked at 3,000 during the 1950s but declined thereafter. The church closed for good in January of 1975. Gary’s 1997 fire destroyed much of the roof and looters have stripped most of the interior. Talks of preservation have never progressed and the fate of this gothic beauty is unclear.” -Gary Indiana | A City’s Ruins
